Succeeding at Succession

Fall 2012 Okanagan Seminar Series for Farm Families and Businesses
Does your farm have a succession plan? When I talk to farmers about succession planning most have good ideas of what they want to achieve. However, these ideas are often vague or undefined. This makes it difficult to direct these ideas into reality. For this reason, I encourage each farm to establish a succession plan.
Planning for succession is a key opportunity for BC’s farm community. Your farm’s succession should occur over time and result in successful transfer of the farm’s knowledge, skills, labour and management. Planning for succession will increase your probability of success. Once you’ve finalized and implemented a plan, you will be satisfied knowing that the best efforts were made to meet the needs, goals and wishes of everyone involved.
We can help you create an action plan necessary to move to the next step. The BC Ministry of Agriculture - Business Development Program has organized a series of succession planning workshops for BC farms. These workshops will provide you with understanding of business arrangements, life interests, security, methods of owning property, will planning, life insurance and a process to assist with information gathering and goal setting. The current series of workshops are scheduled throughout the Okanagan from October 23, 2012 to November 8, 2012.
Take care of your farm and register today at (Registration Link). Locations, dates and times are listed in the registration link.
Funding for these seminars has been provided by Growing Forward, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. The BC Fruit Growers Association has graciously agreed to provide administrative support. This funding and support is gratefully appreciated and acknowledged.
